Welcome to the British Council Senegal website. We’ve been promoting cultural relations between the UK and Senegal for more than 45 years, dating back to the early years of independence. Since taking up the invitation from President Léopold Sédar Senghor to support the development of the English language in Senegal, our partnership with the Senegalese people has gone from strength to strength.

As the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations, we aim is to create a ‘friendly knowledge and understanding’ between the people of the UK and the wider world through our work in education and civil society, English language and arts and culture.

I hope this site gives you a flavour of the work we do in Senegal and captures some of the highlights. As you explore this site, you can find out more about how to study English with us, take a UK exam or access our online English language learning materials. I am very pleased that so many people chose to study English with us at our Teaching Centre and it is particularly encouraging to see so many young learners now taking classes with us. You’ll also learn how we have helped young entrepreneurs from Senegal to develop their business skills through our GREAT Entrepreneur programme.

I’m delighted to have the opportunity to lead our operation in Senegal. I have previously worked for the British Council in a number of different countries. Before coming to Senegal, I was Area Director for South West China, based in Chongqing, and before that I was Country Director for Mauritius. I have also worked in Paris as Deputy Director. For much of my early career, I was based in the UK helping schools, colleges and universities to introduce an international dimension to their work through participation in European Union mobility programmes.

I hope you find our website useful. I encourage you to follow British Council on social media channels and please tell us what you like and how we can make things even better for you. I hope some of you choose to stay in touch with us for many years to come!

With best wishes

Dawn Long

Country Director, Senegal
