English Connects is a major new programme connecting the UK with the next generation of African youth through English. It will improve the quality of English language learning and teaching and facilitate digital literacy; creating opportunities that enable young people to fulfil their potential while improving their employability, resilience and networks. The programme will initially work in three countries in the Sahel – Cote D’Ivoire, Mali and Senegal – before growing across the continent. English Connects aims to reach 2,500,000 young people and 5,000 teachers of English in its first year.
The UK government and the British Council are committed to working in partnership with countries across Africa to support inclusive growth, boost security and build relationships.
English Connects provides international opportunities for UK English language teaching providers, institutions and tech companies, showcasing their expertise, creativity and innovation.
We are working together with governments, the private sector, young entrepreneurs, future leaders and educators across Africa in formal and non-formal education, connecting them with the UK.
High rates of unemployment, increased exposure to social media and the growing presence of multinational companies have all contributed to a growing demand for English, this programme will expand opportunities for young Africans to learn English in both urban and rural areas.
